Ormeau rail facility
A rail facility is being constructed on a 66ha site in the Gold Coast region.
The new rail facility will cater for the expanding passenger train fleet. The 65 Queensland Train Manufacturing Program trains will be maintained and stabled at the Ormeau rail facility.
Benefits
- Increases capacity
- Improves network efficiency
- Contributes to economy
- Contributes to regional growth
Key features
The Ormeau rail facility will be used for train maintenance and stabling and will include:
- acoustic-proofed workshops
- office facilities
- internal access roads
- internal train tracks
- a train wash
- stabling tracks with capacity to house a maximum of 20 trains at any given time.
Download the Ormeau rail facility concept design newsletter for more information about the facility and how the project will manage impacts on the community.
Current status
Construction works will continue in 2024. Construction is expected to be completed in line with the delivery of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program trains.
The temporary construction access road linking the rail facility site to Prairie Road is now open – heavy vehicles are using this access to enter and exit the site.
Feedback on the concept design for the rail facility has now closed.
We are committed to working with the community, including residents and businesses during the construction and operation of the rail facility.

Site access during construction
The Prairie Road temporary construction access road is now open – heavy vehicles are using this to enter and exit the site.
There will be intermittent closures of this access while final asphalting works are completed. During the closures, heavy vehicles will access site via Goldmine Road. We anticipate these works will be completed in May.
You may notice an increase in heavy vehicle traffic on Prairie Road and the presence of traffic control. Water carts and a small number of heavy and light vehicles will still be required to access site via Goldmine Road. Traffic control will only be used on Goldmine Road when required.

Community engagement
Feedback on the Ormeau rail facility concept designs was undertaken between 4 December 2023 and 2 March 2024.
This feedback is now being reviewed and considered as part of the design development process.
Information about key feedback themes will be provided in mid-2024, with information about the final design to be provided by late 2024.

Works scheduled
Construction works are underway with work taking place from Monday to Saturday, between 6:30am and 6:30pm each shift. Security presence will be on the rail facility site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
During May, some work outside of standard hours will be required. Advanced notice will be provided to the community prior to works commencing.
Ormeau rail facility construction site works
From May, we will:
- finish minor works on the temporary construction access road that links Prairie Road to the rail facility site, including asphalting
- complete construction on the staff car parking area near the temporary construction access road
- continue bulk earthworks and ground improvement works including the removal of unusable materials
- deliver quarry materials and concrete to create a level and stable work area
- continue construction of internal roads, culverts and bridges including piling
- clear vegetation, where required
- deliver and remove over-sized equipment to site outside of standard work hours
- connect essential services, including electricity and NBN
- modify site facilities near Goldmine Road.
These works are weather permitting.
Works will involve the use of slashers, excavators, rollers, piling rigs, trucks, elevated work platforms and cranes. We will minimise impacts where possible, including operating equipment within set noise and vibration limits.
On Sunday 26 May, during a planned Queensland Rail track closure, civil works and tree removal will be undertaken within the rail corridor. Works will involve the use of mulchers, chainsaws, excavators and elevated work platforms.
All works comply with environmental requirements, including working in waterways.
